AnnexAir’s Innovation in Composite HVAC Casing Technology
In 2011, AnnexAir became the first company in the world to design and manufacture HVAC unit casings using composite technology instead of traditional steel construction. This breakthrough marked a significant shift in air handling unit design, introducing Thermo-composite HVAC casings built for improved performance, durability, and energy efficiency. Eight years later, AnnexAir introduced another industry first: Bio-composite casings. These casings are engineered to be lightweight, 100% metal-free, and manufactured using recycled plastic bottles. The development of this technology took nearly nine years to perfect, according to an article published by HVAC Informed.
Under the leadership of President François Lemieux, AnnexAir has prioritized modernizing HVAC infrastructure while accelerating the industry's transition toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions.
Understanding Thermo-Composite Construction
The original Thermo-composite design was constructed using welded thermal break aluminum framing. The term “thermo-composite” is derived from thermoplastic composite materials — commonly referred to as fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP).
According to Ensinger, thermoplastic composites typically consist of:
Continuous fiber reinforcement
A thermoplastic matrix material
This combination results in a strong, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant structure.
A key feature of AnnexAir’s Thermo-composite casing is its integrated thermal break insulation system. The thermal break interrupts the transfer of thermal energy through the aluminum frame, significantly reducing heat loss and improving overall unit efficiency. By minimizing thermal bridging, the casing enhances performance while supporting energy conservation goals.
